Visas for Life: The Remarkable Story of Chiune and Yukiko Sugihara

Chiune's father, Yoshimizu Sugihara, was from the city of Yaotsu in the Gifu Prefecture. He though his son should be a doctor or similar professional. But because he wanted to become a linguist, Chiune disappointed his father by intentionally failing his qualifying examination.
